School's back: How NOT to dress your kids

School's back: How NOT to dress your kids

This period of the year can be stressful for some parents and children as well.

One of the questions that echoes in parents mind is how should my child dress for school? What is comfortable, appropriate, easy to manage?

Teenagers on the other side have to answer more complicated questions. What message am I sending or How will others perceive me?

Most middle and high schools have a dress code governing what students can and cannot wear. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, about 15 percent of America's high/combined schools have strict dress codes requiring school uniforms, however, other schools still have many rules and regulations for appropriate clothing.

Below you can find our 7 Dos and Don'ts when it comes to outfit selection.

Dos for Dressing Kids for School:

  1. Weather-Appropriate Clothes: Dress your child in weather-appropriate clothing to keep them comfortable and protected throughout the day.
  2. Comfortable Shoes: Choose comfortable and well-fitting shoes to support their active day at school.
  3. Easy-to-Manage Outfits: Option for clothing with minimal buttons or complicated closures to encourage independence when changing for physical activities or bathroom breaks.
  4. Labeling Clothes: Label your child's clothes with their name to prevent mix-ups and ensure lost items can be returned.
  5. Layering Options: Provide layers that can be easily added or removed based on classroom temperature fluctuations.
  6. School Dress Code: Adhere to the school's dress code guidelines to prevent any dress-related issues during the day.
  7. Reflecting Personal Style: Allow your child to express their personal style through their clothing choices, promoting self-confidence.

Don'ts for Dressing Kids for School:

  1. Overly Fancy Outfits: Avoid overly elaborate outfits that could hinder movement or cause discomfort during activities.
  2. Inappropriate Logos or Messages: Steer clear of clothing with inappropriate logos, messages, or graphics that might violate school dress codes.
  3. Uncomfortable Shoes: Avoid varnished shoes, avoid shoes that are new or uncomfortable, as they could lead to blisters or discomfort throughout the day. If you're getting new shoes let your child wear them a couple of days prior to the school.
  4. Complicated Outfits: Refrain from choosing outfits with intricate or delicate details that might not withstand the rigors of school activities.
  5. Overdressing for the Weather: Ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather, avoiding heavy layers on warm days or light clothing on chilly days.
  6. Unlabeled Clothing: Neglecting to label clothes might result in lost items that are difficult to identify and recover.
  7. Oversized Accessories: Avoid oversized accessories or jewelry that could pose safety hazards or become a distraction.

Remember, the goal is to balance comfort, practicality, and adherence to school guidelines when dressing your child for school.

Bottom line:

Talk to your children, ask them what they like and more important what they don't like.

Check out your school regulations for uniforms and clothes.

Avoid vulgarity, skirts, shorts, crop tops, leggings, tank tops and off-shoulder shirts, pajamas, no gang-related clothing, no overly bulky clothes...
